Soapbox Derby

The Soapbox Derby will be returning again in this year’s Larkhall Village Festival.  It is a free, family event for adult & child teams racing in homemade karts.  Whether it is a few tassels on a wheelbarrow or a designed from the ground up racing chariot, all are welcome!

The course is along St Saviour’s Road, starting from the Bladud’s Head and finishing at the Larkhall Inn, with a few obstacles along the way.  The winners of the race heats will qualify for the Grand Final with the chance to become the Larkhall Soapbox Champion! Alongside this there will also be prizes for the ‘Best Engineered’ and the ‘Best Presented’ Soapboxes.  So whether you are a budding Engineer, Artist or Fashion Designer there is an opportunity for you to be creative and get involved.

Every kart must be driven by a child (maximum age 11) and be pushed continuously by an adult, without the help of peddles or motors.

The event will be on Sunday May 3rd.  Registration starts from 1.30pm in the Village Square.  There will then be a parade to the start line, with the first race starting at 2.30pm.  Thereafter the heats will run until the Grand Final and then prizes will be handed out again in the Village Square.

Even if you’re not entering come along on the day to cheers on those who are.  There will be a prize for the best photo or video taken of the event.

Stay up-to-date with all the latest news here and the Soapbox Derby’s dedicated Facebook page.  Seeing as you are here, why don’t you take a look at last year’s frolics in this short video to get your creative juices flowing.

So go to your shed, your garage, your loft – dig out those unused bits of wood and cardboard, dust off your tools and paintbrushes and start building!  It should be a fun couple of hours, so the team look forward to see you there.
