Self-Guided History Walks

Self-guided history walk by Susanna Watson
Self-guided trail: John Wood, Swainswick and the legends of Bath

John Wood and his son (‘JW the Younger’) were the architects of Georgian Bath, between them creating the Royal Crescent, The Circus, Queen Square, Prior Park, North and South Parades and much else besides. But what inspired them and why are they buried in the tiny church of St Mary’s in Upper Swainswick? Take a walk in the Lam Valley from Larkhall to Woolley and Swainswick. Delve into Bath’s legendary and architectural past and visit John Wood's recently - and beautifully - restored burial stone.

Woolley and Swainswick churches are hosting exhibitions by local artists as part of the Larkhall Open Studios Art Trail, so there is even more to see on the way.

The churches will be open 11am - 5pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Tea, biscuits and toilet available at Swainswick Church.
